Highway Work Zone Safety Law Goes Into Effect - October 1, 2008

Governor Rell Signs Highway Work Zone Safety Bill - June 2, 2008

Thanks to the efforts of dozens of committed CEUI members, our union was able to pass legislation to improve highway work zone safety this year.

The bill goes into effect on October 1, 2008 and creates the offenses of “endangerment of a highway worker” and “aggravated endangerment of a highway worker."  It provides stiff fines and penalties for drivers who violate traffic laws within a work zone.  It also establishes a Highway Work Zone Safety Advisory Council to make ongoing recommendations for improving work zone safety.

We have made a difference in our state and in the lives of our DOT members.  This is an example of political action working at its best and an example of what we can achieve when we work together.  Congratulations!

Governor Rell VETOES the Connecticut Healthcare Partnership

Governor Rell sided with insurance companies, brokers and the Connecticut Business and Industry Association (CBIA) over workers when she vetoed the Connecticut Healthcare Partnership earlier this month.  The legislation would have opened the state employee health insurance plan to municipal employees, non-profit organizations and small businesses.  H.B. 5536, passed both chambers, would have expanded the size of the state plan and used its increased bargaining power to negotiate lower insurance rates for everyone.  Municipalities could have passed the savings on to taxpayers in the form of property tax relief.

Call Governor Rell and tell her you are disappointed with her VETO!

GET INVOLVED!

Sometimes members forget the important role politics play in their lives. Political action is especially important for public employees. Most workers do not have the opportunity to hire or fire their own boss. You do! By getting involved in politics, you can decide who controls the future of thousands of public employees. Don't let others decide your future! Help out.
