Answers to Some Common Questions

Why should I join a union?
Can my boss stop me from organizing?
Can I be fired for joining a union?
Can a union make me go on strike?
Will I pay a lot of money to join?

Why should I join a union?
Without a union, you have no protection. Your boss can take away your benefits, deny you a promotion that you deserve, or even fire you for no reason. A union gives you better job protections and you'll bargain a contract that guarantees your wages and benefits. Your employer won't be able to fire or discipline you without just cause when you have a union on your side.

Can my boss stop me from organizing?
NO. If a majority of the people where you work vote to join a union, your employer is required by law to accept your union and bargain with you.

Can I be fired for joining a union?
It is ILLEGAL for your employer to fire, harass, discipline, threaten or take anything away from you because you decide to join a union. If you think your boss has broken the law, call CEUI/MEUI right away at (860) 344-0311!

Can a union make me go on strike?
YOU ARE THE UNION! You and your coworkers vote on all matters concerning you, including whether to go on strike or not.

Will I pay a lot of money to join?
You pay nothing to join. We have no initiation fees. After a majority of you and your coworkers have voted to join the union, you'll elect a committee to bargain, with the help of skilled negotiators. After the committee has a contract that they believe provides you with job security, good wages and benefits, and safe working conditions, they will bring it back so that you and all of our coworkers can read and vote whether or not to accept it. You'll only pay dues after you've voted for a contract.
