| 2002 CEUI Scholarship Recipients
The Connecticut Employees Union Independent Local 511 each year
awards four $2,500 scholarships to deserving children of Union members.
The scholarship, named in honor of founder and first President Salvatore
J. Perruccio, is primarily financed through the proceeds of the
annual Golf Tournament. This year’s tournament was held on
Thursday, June 27, 2002, at the Portland Golf Club in Portland,
CT.
The Scholarship recipients, along with their parent(s), were introduced
at the awards banquet following the 14th Annual Golf Tournament.
This year’s CEUI scholarship recipients are:
CHRISTOPHER MARCHESE
Christopher is a graduate of Middletown High. His father, John,
is a DOT maintainer at Hartford Bridge, and mother, Patricia, teaches
in Southington. Elizabeth, his sister, is a student at Providence
College. He was a member of the National Honor Society, and
as a member of the soccer team, was awarded All-Conference honors
and All State honors. He was also on the track & field team,
setting a school record in the high jump. He volunteers his time
at the Middlesex YMCA and helps with a soccer clinic organized by
the Middletown Park & Rec. He has also served at spaghetti dinners
which benefit children. Christopher will be studying business and
accounting at Sacred Heart.
AMANDA MORGAN
Amanda graduated from Valley Regional High School in Deep River,
where her younger sister Erin is a sophomore. Her father, Douglas,
is a DOT maintainer at the Tylerville Garage. Her mother, Joyce,
is a graphic designer. Amanda was a member of the National Honor
Society, and student representative to the Board of Education. She
participated in the school musicals, played tennis and softball,
and was captain of the field hockey team. Her community projects
include helping at a battered women’s shelter and organizing
a blood drive. Amanda’s interest in forensics & science
have steered her towards the study of biology at Northeastern University.
SEAN REILLY
Sean is a graduate of Xavier High School in Middletown. His sister,
Erin, will be a senior at Georgetown University. His father, Thomas,
is an account manager at ConnectiCare, and his mother, Linda, is
a dupli-cating technician at the State Comptrollers Office. Sean’s
activities at Xavier include track & field, peer ministry, and
as an actor in the Xavier-Mercy theatrical productions. He was nominated
for the Xavier Principal’s “Outstanding Service Award.”
In the community, Sean volunteers his time at Gaylord Rehab Hospital.
He developed the “Mitten Tree Project” and the
“Cereal For Kids in Need”. Sean will be attending Lynn
University in Boca Raton, FL where he will be studying business.
KRISTEN SODER
Kristen a graduate of Coventry High School, is the daughter of
Kenneth, a University of Connecticut cook, and Jean, an American
Airlines sales representative. Her brother, Kenneth II, attends
UConn. Kristen was co-captain of the coed track and field team,
and played soccer. She also served as class president and as president
of the National Honor Society. Her community service activities
include Meals on Wheels, the Literacy Volunteers Program, teaching
catechism, and delivering food to soup kitchens. At Sacred Heart
University, Kristen will study nursing and hopes to specialize in
neo-natal care.
In addition to the CEUI scholarship, the Municipal Employees Union
Independent, Local 506, also awards a $1,000 scholarship each year
to a deserving child of an MEUI member.
VICTORIA SACCOCCIO
Victoria is a graduate of East Catholic High School in Manchester.
Her father, Dante, is a self-employed contractor and her mother,
Carol, is a paraprofessional at East Hampton Memorial School. She
has an older brother, Cliff, who is a cook at Shady Glen. Victoria
has been involved in a variety of service projects including Habitat
for Humanity, where she helped build a shed for a single mom. She
also works as an aid to a junior high youth group and helps at a
food feast. She was on the high school Student Council and the Executive
Board, and was recipient of the Cornell Book Award. Influenced by
a trip to Costa Rica, Victoria will study pre-veterinary biology
at Boston University.
The Salvatore J. Perruccio Humanitarian Award is given annually
to a union member for outstanding recognition of his/her time spent
serving the community by volunteering, proving his/her leadership
and always being there to lend a helping hand.
Ed Lynch has served as legal counsel for the Union for thirty-four
years. His dedication, honesty and commitment have meant much to
the thousands of CEUI members and their families. Ed graduated from
UConn Law. He has been a managing partner with Eisenberg, Anderson,
Michalik & Lynch for 15 years. Ed was a National Guard member
for 20 years. At the time of his retirement, he was a colonel in
JAG. He retired in 1997 as a professor at CCSU. He and his wife
Drina have one daughter, Amy.
